Unholy Night is a grim, atmospheric and cinematic D&D 5e compatible adventure for characters of levels 3–5, combining elements of folk horror, mystery, and supernatural tension. It is designed for 2–4 players and a Game Master who enjoys dark and eerie storytelling, moral complexity, and atmospheric tension. Set in the remote northern town of Fleetwood, the story unfolds during the Lantern Festival, a sacred celebration meant to keep the long winter darkness at bay. But this year, the light has drawn something else - something born of guilt, jealousy, and fire.

The town of Fleetwood is shrouded in winter’s icy grip, its lantern festival meant to brighten short, dark days with warmth and light. This year, however, the festival hides a growing terror: children are disappearing, fireplaces burn with unnatural blue flames, and spectral whispers drift through snow-laden streets. The priest hires a group of witch hunters - or willing adventurers - to uncover the source of the curse and protect the town. As the hunters arrive, the eerie normality of Fleetwood is unsettling. Homes are festooned with glowing lanterns, townsfolk seem distracted by rumors and grief, and the shadows hold more than just winter’s darkness. Clues of past tragedy emerge slowly: the drunken father, Nelson Stone, his distant and unstable wife, Jendra, and the vanished daughter, Jenna. The adventurers must navigate both the physical hazards of ice and snow and the supernatural distortions surrounding the town to uncover the truth.

The adventure unfolds in three escalating acts: investigation and gathering of information, confronting the human and spectral players entwined in the curse, and the final climax where the hunters face Jenna’s restless spirit. Choices matter - they may reconcile the ghost peacefully, forcefully banish her, or leave the situation partially unresolved. Each path has consequences, testing the players’ moral judgment, courage, and tactical skill.
This grimdark, gothic one-shot is designed for 2 or more players plus a GM. Player characters take the role of the hunters, while Nelson, Jenna, spectral children, and environmental supernatural forces are controlled by the GM. The tone is tense, atmospheric, and cinematic, blending moral horror, supernatural suspense, and dramatic confrontation against a frozen, haunted backdrop.
