The first Ken doll, introduced in 1961, was a 12-inch hard plastic doll with "flocked" hair (short, fuzzy hair). He was marketed as Barbie's boyfriend and was intended to embody clean-cut, preppy masculinity. The doll was named after Kenneth Handler, the son of Barbie's creator, Ruth Handler.
