Description

In 1962, Aerojet's Robert Truax designed a super heavy-lift booster to propel up to 550 metric tons of payload into low earth orbit. Dubbed the Sea Dragon, the massive 500-foot-tall "dumb booster" would have been launched partially submerged at sea to minimize expensive support facilities. Although never developed, the Sea Dragon did "come to life" in Seasons 2 and 3 of the Apple TV+ alternate reality series "For All Mankind" in which the massive booster, first launched in an alternate 1983, played a key role in helping the U.S. establish its permanent lunar base.

Another "alternate" American moon program would have had Apollo's Command/Service vehicle and separate Lunar Module replaced with a single, heavier direct-ascent lander. Had this plan been pursued, the Saturn V would have been replaced by an even larger Saturn C-8, in which both its first and second stages would have been equipped with eight engines instead of the original five. This would have provided the vehicle with 12 million initial pounds of thrust, compared to the 7.5 million produced by the actual Saturn V moon rocket.
