Description

'There are no Hollywood films that highlight the lives lost or the battle waged in the Huertgen Forrest -- just a handful of books written by those who were there or had the honor of knowing the brave and fortunate survivors.'-4th Infantry Division Online History

In September 1944, the US 9th Division began attacking German positions around the town of Schevenhutte, to tie down enemy forces and eventually push to the dams on the Roer River at Duren, just over 5 miles away. Their capture would prevent the Germans from potentially flooding the area to the north, in order to stifle the planned Allied advance.

The town was quickly taken, and things seemed ripe for the picking. But it was a mirage. The Germans quickly regrouped, and with the weather forestalling use of the overwhelming Allied air support, thereafter they fought fiercely for every inch of heavily wooded ground. What would be known as the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest had begun. Before it was over it would inflict more than 30,000 US casualties, and rank as the longest single battle ever fought by the US Army.

Trees, Trees, and More Trees

Eventually the Germans would give way, as their last-ditch offensive in the Ardennes ignited and consumed their last resources. But by then the name of the Forrest would be forever imprinted on the men and units that fought there, and earn a new nickname for the venerable 28th 'Keystone' Division from Pennsylvania, as the 'The Bloody Bucket'.

Hitting the Siegfried Line

Combat Actions WWII: Murphy's Heroes - HURTGEN FOREST takes place in those dark, dense, trackless forests. As with previous version of the Combat Actions series, players assume command of a front-line combat infantry squad; with all activity occurring at the man-to-man level.

The game provides an intense experience through a variety of scenarios, from probes to full-out assaults on fortified positions. Between the dense woods, limited sighting and detection, you will constantly feel the eyes of the unknown enemy on you. Every second as you move through the trees, you'll know that he's out there, waiting. Always waiting. Waiting for you to let your guard down. Waiting for you to make a mistake.

Waiting to annihilate you.

Join the Bloody Bucket

Throw in grenades, smoke, a variety of unit types and defensive positions, and each mission becomes a formidable challenge. As a combat leader you never want to lose a man, and each time hurts to the bone. But in the Hurtgen Forest, losses are inevitable. The key to making it through is sucking it up, from deep down, and then figuring out a way to keep moving to accomplish the mission. It's intense, even unbearable. It's what separates those that can.... from everyone else.

Time to Saddle Up

As with previous titles in the series, the game system is quick to learn and play, while the variable command system ensures that scenarios are nail-bitingly suspenseful and never the same. Using actual units and weapons of the era, Combat Actions WWII: Murphy's Heroes - HURTGEN FOREST adds improved 3-D graphics and views, sound, and special effects to bring players into the depths of the dark woods.

The only thing left is to answer the question... under pressure, will you be able to see the forest for the trees?
