Description

Nijon Oonitsaupivia, a young barbarian from a small plains tribe, is the son of the god Mongoose, although few of the tribe believe his mother’s claim. All boys of the Va-Naleu, Nijon’s tribe, must spend forty days and forty night alone in the wilderness before they can call themselves men. On Nijon’s manhood quest, he slays a lioness with no weapon but a pointed stick.

While Nijon lies near death from the lioness’s claws, his father Mongoose saves him and bestows on him a companion, a young mongoose brother. When Nijon and Brother return to the Va-Naleu, evil forces have taken over the tribe. Nijon and Brother are forced to leave the plains and find their way in the world.

In the city of Purasham, Nijon encounter wealth, thievery and treachery on a scale he never imagined. Nlavi, beautiful daughter of King Manoos, longs to escape from her betrothal to the repulsive Mesech. When Nlavi is captured by a dragon, heroes flock to her rescue. But Nijon is among the bravest and smartest of heroes…

From beginning to end, Mika Nashram, magician and rapscallion, works both alongside and against Nijon… and Nijon never knows which side Mika will take until the deeds are done.
