Soulless Jailer #2

Ulf did not understand why he was imprisoned. He wasn’t even sure he was imprisoned. He seemed to be on a giant board from Fox And Geese, each square ten paces of flat stone across. Between each square, still water, ankle deep, two paces wide. On most of the spaces were single prisoners. Many shaking or sobbing. None standing. Mist obscured the distance. Several Jailers patrolled the area. He could not tell how many. They moved jerkily, like crabs on the beach or marionettes in a child’s show. The only sounds came from the snapping of their robes and swinging chains as they wandered like insects over a meal. He stood up. A prisoner in the next square gasped and signaled for him to get back down. Too late. A Jailer had already noticed. Ulf could feel the tears well in his eyes as it approached. He dropped to his knees under a weight of sorrow like nothing he had ever felt before.
