Description

This ‘oak-blade’ replica represents a sword known as a Late Medieval and Tudor ‘Hand-an-arf’ (hand and a half). By the C15 plate armor was better fitting and protective, the use of a shield to glance blows was no longer necessary. Knights fought more and more often on foot in the center of an army. With no reins for the horse and no shield, both hands could be used to fight with. This sword was held in the right hand for quick single handed action, but had a handle almost big enough for both hands. Half the time, the left hand would support the pommel of the sword and steer the blade, like a rudder, adding greater force and accuracy to the blow. Also commonly known as ‘The Fatherless Sword’.
