Description

Pictures shown are of the item you will receive.

You did read the title correctly, this jewel of a collectible is a 1st edition, 2nd printing copy of the original fantasy roleplaying game: Dungeons & Dragons.

Approximately 2000 copies were reported to have been produced after the runaway success of the 1st printing. This version features the 1975 box with vertical wood striations and all the books are clearly labeled on their inner covers with a printing notice identifying it as a second printing. All the classic elements that a collector wants to see are here, the bandit-like appropriation of Hobbits and Ents seen on page 9 of the Men and Magic book and the cover and the image of the warrior on horseback that "paid homage" to Doctor Strange #167. All the history is there, all the interest and intrigue of the game's beginning.

This is a well used copy, perhaps it spent a bit of time stuck in a gelatinous cube? That never happened to any of us, right? Right?

Condition Notes:

Box - Fair – The box top is in Fair condition, while it is is structurally sound, the label is a bit torn, heavy stained, has the remnants of an old price sticker, and it appears a goblin was taking his first steps learning to write. The bottom of the box is also in fair condition and structurally sound. There is a piece of clear tape on it and a few surface paper tears. All corners and seams are fully intact with no signs of splitting.

Book #1 - Fair+ – This volume would appear to be VG+ upon first inspection but a closer look reveals initials on the front cover, typical light wear from moderate use on the front and back cover, the edge of the pages show signs of being heavily thumbed through, pages 17-20 are loose but included, there is a bit of rusting on the bottom staple but has yet to bleed through to the cover or pages and lastly, there are a few marks, stains and pencil marking within the pages. The pencil markings could be erased.

Book #2 - Fair – This volume shows the same typical light wear from use along with being heavily thumbed through. Pages 13-28 are loose but included. There are few pages with 1/4 inch dog ears and both staples are showing a minor amount of rust that has yet to bleed through to the cover or pages. Without the loose pages, this book would be a solid VG.

Book #3 – VG – This volume has less wear on the cover than the previous two and only light amount signs of being thumbed through on the interior pages. The back cover has a few smaller stains. Pages 17-20 are loose but included and the stapes do not show any sign of rust. The pages are crisp and clean, without interior markings. Without the loose pages and the small stains on the back cover, this book would receive an EX grade.

Reference Sheets - Unfortunately the reference sheets may have completely disappeared in the gelatinous cube I mentioned before and are missing. Fret not though, we have cast an illusion spell and included a photocopied set of reference sheets for you. A Fair+ original copy of the corrections sheet is also included!
