Description

Romistrov’s Offensive covers the only planned full Russian offensive against the 1st SS Adolf Hitler Division at Kursk on July 12th. At this time, this division was at it’s highwater mark in their advance to Prokhorovka, just a few miles away!

For the attack, the Russians would use there 29th, 18th Tank Corps in a direct head-on assault on SS positions, many that were not secured. Also included in the Russian attack would be 42nd Guards Division and the 9th Airborne Division that defended Prokhorvka.

This offensive, which also could be called a “meeting engagement” because the SS units had also begun their last attempt to reach the town a few hours before the Russians began their own attack. What ensued were swirling tank battles, many within 100 yards range. The lead SS units were greatly outnumbered and were in fact overran. Oddly, perhaps in haste, the Russian commanders did not tell the tank units of the anti-tank ditch that the SS had seized. This ditch ran across part of the area opposite Russian units. There was only one way across by the road held by a SS battalion.

The end result of this offensive was the gutting of the Russian tank corps with minor losses to the SS. The Russians lost hundreds of tanks and all assigned objectives failed.
