Description

Battles of the Civil War, 1861-1865: The Complete Kurz & Allison Prints includes thirty-six spectacular full-color battle scenes of the American Civil War which convey a depth of feeling and perspective no camera could ever capture.

Louis Kurz was a widely known artist and friend of President Abraham Lincoln. During the war, Kurz was commissioned by President Lincoln to sketch what he saw at various battlefields and camps. His sketches of the battlefields of the Civil War were the first to be issued after the close of the conflict, and later appeared as tremendously popular lithographs throughout America.

In 1880 Kurz formed a partnership with the noted engraver Alexander Allison, and they then printed the first of the thirty-six Civil War battle scenes in this book by the now all but lost process of stone lithography.
