Description

July 4th, the 87th birthday of the United States, proved to be a triumphant day for President Lincoln and the Union war effort. General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was in retreat and, out West, a more significant victory had been won when the besieged Confederate garrison at Vicksburg, Mississippi, surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. From that point on, the Mississippi River was firmly under Union control and the Confederacy was split in half.

In this book, one of the foremost Civil War historians relates the long and grueling struggle for Vicksburg as well as a detailed study of the fight for Port Hudson, of Mississippi naval battles, and many interesting fragments of the Civil War absent from many history books.
