Description

Colonel Charles Callwell was a senior serving officer in the Intelligence Branch of the War Office when his Small Wars was first published in 1896; he went on to serve on General Buller’s Staff in South Africa up to the Relief of Ladysmith, retiring after World War I as a Major-General. This reprint of his classic guide on the art of warfare is taken from the third, 1906 edition, thus incorporating the lessons to be learned from the 1898 Sudan offensive, guerrilla warfare in Cuba, the Punjab and the Second Boer War. Unrivalled almost up to the outbreak of World War II as the officially recommended and indispensable textbook on the principles and practice of war, the book was held in high esteem by generations of officers, not only British, but of other nations as well. It still as much to offer that is relevant to warfare today, as well as being an invaluable source of information on Victorian military practice.
