Description

The Civil War was characterized by colorful uniforms; apparently neither army thought to provide its soldiers with uniforms which would have blended in with the terrain.

In this comprehensive book, the author points out that the traditionally held idea that the Southern soldiers wore grey and the North blue was not always true, especially in the case of the Confederates. During the early months of the war, uniforms which sported every color of the rainbow could be seen and grades of officers were distinguished by the number of buttons worn on their colorful coats.

In addition, there were thousands of units in the armies and many of them had had their own distinctive uniforms.
