Description

This documentary novel, by German author Theodor Plievier, has been translated into 26 languages. His books were burned after Hitler took power and he fled to France, then Sweden, and eventually settled in the Soviet Union.

The book is written around a Panzer commander and an NCO of a penal battalion, showing the different backgrounds of the men and how they experienced the war differently. The former obeys orders and fights with a sense of duty, but loses confidence in the German military leadership as he feels he and his men are being sacrificed to a lost cause. The latter's work, collecting the dead from the battlefield, loses his humanity as he works under constant fire and is exposed to unrelenting horror.
