Description

As part of General Ulysses Grant’s final campaign against Confederate forces in 1864, General Benjamin Butler’s army was to serve as a detached left wing of the main Federal thrust in northern Virginia. Butler was to ascend the James River; land south of Richmond; invest the city from the south; and together with Grant and the Army of the Potomac, “scoop” it out of the Confederacy.
