New York (The “Empire State“) — Population 19,465,197

New York covers ~54,500 square miles (141,300 km2). It has 3 mountain ranges: the Adirondacks in the northeast, the Catskills below that, and the beginnings of the Allegheny mountains in the southwest. The Great Lakes form the northern border of the state: Buffalo sits in the northwest next to Lake Erie, while Rochester sits alongside Lake Ontario. Just north of Watertown is the Thousand Islands region on the St. Lawrence River, leading eventually through the St. Lawrence Seaway. The Hudson River Valley is a dominant feature of eastern NY. It extends from Lake Champlain east of Plattsburgh, down to the Atlantic Ocean beside New York City.

New York State was originally settled by Dutch merchants who traded fur with the Lenape, Iroquois, and other indigenous peoples of the region. Three initial outposts sprung up along the Hudson River: the Petroonship of Rensselaerswyck (now Albany), Esopus (Kingston), and New Amsterdam (New York City). The successes of these early trading posts were a key factor to the overall success of the colonies in North America. The British took possession of these colonies at the conclusion of the Second Anglo-Dutch War (July 31, 1667) and changed the name of the entire region to the Province of New York (after King James of York).
