Description

During the inter-war years, the development of armored warfare was advanced mostly by trial and error. Different nations had differing opinions on how warfare of this nature would be conducted in the future. Despite the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles; forbidding the German Army possessing any tracked fighting vehicles, this didn’t stop its officers from study tactics.

The role of the Panzer IV was to provide close support by firing high explosive (HE) to suppress enemy positions. The design of the Panzer IV begun in January 1934; three companies Rheinmettal-Borsig, Krupp and MAN each produced their own designs. The Krupp design designated VK2001/K proved the most acceptable; the first production version of the vehicle begun to appear in 1936.

The improvements seen in the Panzer IV D included the increase of the side and rear armor from 15mm to 20mm and the fitting of an external gun mantle to the 7.5cm KwK 37 L/24 gun. The hull machine-gun was also re-introduced on this variant. The Panzer IV D saw service in Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa and the Soviet Union.
