In 1936, as the world plunged toward the grimmest war in history, a handful of people called "Talents" manifested strange powers that set them apart from the rest of humanity. No one really knew why. With these powers man took to the air without mechanical aid, explored the depths of the sea without life support, and touched the rim of space. To the rank and file of humanity, Talents seemed godlike in their abilities. Only the Talents themselves, pushed to the front lines of every battle, knew the truth—that the power that they found by chance seemed pale and pointless in the face of death.
