Great Throw Down Game

Saturday, December 5, 2009
Reviewer: Chris C from Stockton, CA

Review: This version is the down and dirty, no frills version of Axis and Allies. It contains all of the new units and rules of A&A 50th Anniversary, but leaves out Weapons Development and IPC`s The rules suggest using a piece of paper to keep track, I use colored Poker chips.

The board has all of the same territories as 2nd Edition, but is rendered in the same artwork as the 50th Anniversary. All of the sculpts are the same as 50th Anniversary.

The players are the same as 1st and 2nd Edition; USSR, Germany, UK, Japan and USA.

The lack of Weapons Development is not as bad as it might sound to the veteran players as most of the time in previous games for me and my group, it was a luxury anyway. Many of those games were fought without a single IPC spent on Weapons Development. For people being introduced to the A&A world, this makes the game a little less complicated.

In short, this game is not epic like A&A 50th Anniversary was, but almost a condensed, or reconsolidated version of previous editions

This game is a great introduction for the first time player. If you`ve never played A&A before, this is a great version to introduce you to all A&A has to offer, especially so if you are a WWII History fan.

For the veteran player who wants a quick, throw-down game when time is limited, this game is great. For someone who was looking for a re-release of 50th Anniversary, you will likely be disappointed.

My overall rating is based on a comparison to the 50th Anniversary Edition.
