An interesting game on an unusual subject

Reviewer: Roland Lee from Houston, TX

Review: This is a fairly abstract solitaire card game in which the player takes on the role of the leadership of the National Socialist party in 1934 and try to pave the way for the smooth transition and consolidation of power to Adolf Hitler upon President Hindenberg's death. Historically, the German army was willing to support Adolf Hitler's bid for power if he "did something" about Ernst Rohm, the leader of the SA, which amounted to a private army whose existence made the German generals a little nervous. In the game, the player must gain the favour of the generals, prop up the German economy, keep the SA in line and nurture the nascent SS so as to set up the eventual purge of the SA (and Ernst Rohm) which the title of the game refers to.

The game is fairly simple, in line with Minden Games's philosophy of designing games that are simple and (relatively) fast to play. The game is fairly abstract but not so much so that one loses the flavour of what the game is supposed to simulate. It also seems to avoid falling into the trap of becoming an exercise in dice rolling and the decisions the player makes from turn to turn seem to have an impact on the final outcome - which is a good thing where games are concerned.

The subject matter is a little unusual and may be put off some people - after all, you're basically putting yourself in the role of Adolf Hitler and his cronies as they plot to consolidate the power base of the Nazi party.
