Review: Call of Cthulhu would be the more famous horror RPG, but I must say that Chill is second to nothing regarding the horror genre. Chill has a great system and creates a great atmosphere. As envoys for the secret SAVE association the players must defeat The Unknown, an evil that plots around the world. They will be sent on missions ranging from the Highlands in scotland to the deep jungles of Latin America. Chill has a great complexity to it. When creating your Player Characters, you base them around 8 abilities: Strength, Stamina, Perception, Dexterity, Agility, Luck, Willpower, and Personality. You can have from 10 to 90 in eachability since Chill uses a %-ile system. Chill uses Insight Points to create PCs and IPs can also be earned through adventuring and completing missions. Skills in Chill are based on the abilities relevant to it. For ex: Throwing Weapon is based on (STR+DEX)/2. Then the player can "buy" levels in each skill for his IPs. There are 3 levels: Student, Teacher and Master. The first 2 adds 15% each, the Master level adds further 20%. The PC can also add "Edges" and "Drawbacks". Edges can be bought by using IPs or by adding Drawbacks. Drawbacks gives the player bonus IPs to use. Edges are cool extra stuff, such as: Ambidexterity, Night Vision, Improved Willpower Recovery, and Courage, among others. Drawbacks include: Cowardice, Crippled, Hunted, and Impulsiveness, among others. This is a cool way to personalize your PC! But there are even more stuff! You can also add so called "disciplines" of "The Art" - a supernatural power that associates of SAVE can use. Itīs a form of magic/mental power. This is in contrast to the evil beings of the Unknown who uses their Evil Way magic. The Art gives PCs powers such as: Sensing the Unknown, Telepathic Empathy, Incorporeal Attack, Leave the Body, among others.
As you can guess Chill offers a multitude in gaming. Your PC has lot of different assets with which to fight the adversaries of the Unknown. SAVE supports the PCs with equipment, logistics, background info and a large net of contacts that can aid the PCs in different ways.
Chill is a fantastic game that really should have more followers. In all aspects itīs a better game than Call of Cthulhu. And it will soon grow. Other Worlds Creations Inc. now have the rights to publish more great Chill stuff!
