From designer Lance McMillan comes the expansion kit to Dresden 20 and Katzbach 20. Gorlitz 20 is based on a battle that almost occurred during Napoleon’s final campaign in Germany, on 3-6 September 1813. One player commands the Coalition forces under the Prussian Marshall Gebhard von Blucher, while the other commands the French army under the command of Marshall Etienne Jacques MacDonald (which may be reinforced by elements of Napoleon’s Grande Armee).

This great near-battle creates a real “players” situation with few pieces and many tough decisions for both sides and events unfold all around you. Gorlitz 20 is also featured as part of the Germany 20 series to link into a Campaign Game.

Note: Gorlitz 20 is not a ‘stand alone’ game. You must own a copy of Katzbach 20 to use this expansion kit (there are optional provisions in the rules that also allow you to incorporate other forces from Dresden 20 in an expanded scenario as well).

Historically, the "Battle of Gorlitz" never occurred. MacDonald was retreating after his defeat at the Katzbach River where his army had been severely mauled, with Blucher in a somewhat cautious pursuit. In the actual event, Napoleon rushed to MacDonald's assistance and his arrival on the scene was enough to get Blucher to fall back without a fight. Without Napoleon's impending arrival, it would have been unlikely that MacDonald would have stopped his retreat at Gorlitz and allowed an engagement to develop in the first place.

The intent of the game is to allow players to see what might have occurred had Blucher not fallen back after realizing Napoleon was about to strike, and to further experiment with variable reinforcement schedules (i.e. Napoleon showing up with fewer troops, or even conceivably no troops at all). So, you can play without any chance of Napoleon's troops (all of which are coming from Dresden) showing up, but you miss out on a major part of what the game's intended to illustrate. -Lance McMillan
