In 1974 Libya seized the 114,000 mile strip of land in Chad called the Aozou Strip. The Libyan military, backed with Soviet military hardware was easily far stronger than anything Chad could field. However, with the Help of the French Foreign Legion, Chad was able to stabilize the battle lines. The scales tipped in Libya's favor again when the Islamic Legion, a mercenary group, joinned the conflict against Chad. This is when Chad came up with the idea of putting Howitzers on the frames of Toyotas, giving the war its nickname of the "Toyota Wars".
