Review: This is the same game as the original 1980s SPI game. Very nice are the new and vastly superior graphic art, the 112 new event and personality cards, and the buildable cathedrals, universities, armies & fleets. All this is great. The old game needed some major mechanical reworking which is not provided here. For example, rulers were not single mindedly devoted to statecraft. As are moderns, they were constantly in debt to money lenders to for the sake of placating their wives and children. Although the role of religion in their lives should not be exaggerated, it too was a factor. So the victory conditions should not be strictly Bismarckian. The rules re diplomatic endeavors and parleys are as confusing as in the original. Home made crib sheets to keep straight all the modifiers and diplomatic procedures are a must.
