Review: CoC has been around for many years and is one of the greatest rpg ever! Its setting is the dark, mysterious world of writer Lovecraft where unbelievable evil surrounds us humans. You can choose your own time-period: the 1890s, the 1920s, or modern. The PCs are called "investigators" and often take roles as investigating journalists, retired detectives or PIs, or psychologists tracking the forces of Cthulhu. The games uses the classic %-die system, which is a great alternativ to all D20-systems. However, CoC is also available in the D20-format. CoC is unique in it´s feature that it deals with PCs actually getting mentally insane. Just as you use "hit points" for your physical status, you also have "sanity points" that deals with your mental status. The more you get to know abouth the "Cthulhu Mythos", which is a skill detailing your knowledge about the dark secrets, the closer you get to being locked-up in an asylum. Sometimes you can get psychoteraphy to be cured, but there´s always a risk your investigator ends up in an asylum screaming...
The game is realistic with a fantastically written rulesbook ready to play. You choose a profession, roll die for abilities such as Strength, Constitution, Power, Dexterity, Appearance, Size, Intelligence and Education. These will also decide your base chance with certain skills. Your PCs grow as you earn storypoints when solving mysteries. The great thing with the game is the balance between fighting and solving mysteries. A great deal of role-playing is also needed as the investigators need to gather evidence, and skills such as library use, occult, and psychology are important. There´s a lot of CoC players out there and a lot of great products to the game so don´t hesitate, CoC is a must for any gamer!
