Squalls

The Squalls are those minor winds and currents whose names are a secret to all but the Soul Wardens of the Air Caste. These clever scholars know only too well the true strengths of the Squalls lie in their vast numbers, flexibility and – given the right focus is used – several Squalls can be combined to give birth to one of the feared Greater Storm Elementals.

Even on their own the Squalls remain fierce fighters. Armed not only with their shearing claws, they can also summon the power of the storm. Lightning crackles, thunder roars, and irresistible vortexes whirl through their foes. Enemies who underestimate them often find a surprise they do not survive to understand.

So intimately aware do the Soul Wardens of Air remain of the potential of these troops that many of them develop the habit of treating specific Squalls almost as if they were pets. Stories tell of Soul Wardens keeping the same Squalls for a lifetime, creating a special bond with their trusted companions during their deepest initiation rites. Since the Squalls are undying elemental beings whose physical manifestation may only be temporarily disrupted this legend may be true. Some even believe the summoning of individual, specific elemental entities is possible by invoking their true name.

Sometimes a Soul Warden will summon a small group of Squalls to inhabit the crystal gardens they sculpt as places of restful meditation. The music of the Squalls adds to the atmosphere of Focus and recuperation, something that may seem strange to those lucky enough to have faced them in battle and lived.
