Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) patrols are led by a pilot cars, whose duty is to test out the ground ahead of the rest of the patrol for soft sand and other desert hazards. In the first few years this car was a Ford V8, but the American Willys Jeep quickly became a favorite as they became available.
