Bard was one of a company of archers in the lake-town of Esgaroth and rose to great prominence after he destroyed the dragon Smaug with his last remaining arrow, thanks to advice he received from the thrush who told him of the great worm's weak spot. Thereafter he became the first king of the refounded town of Dale.
