    D20 Future: A mixed bag

Review: I'd been eagerly awaiting this title since it was announced, as it seemed to promise a new, GURPS-like, flexibility for the D20 system. After finishing my first cursory read-through of the book, I find it to be good...but not without some issues. My first concern has to do with the new advanced classes: they are quite a bit more powerful than their D20 counterparts, gaining multiple class features per level. Also, the requirements seem to shoehorn players into choosing certain base classes, even going so far as to require particular talents to qualify. The Dreadnaught class, for example, requires two Tough Hero talents. The Feat section includes a group of feats that allows a player to select two talents from any one base class' trees, without taking any levels in that class. This pretty much makes base classes other than Strong/Fast obsolete, as any class can now pick and choose from the other class' trees with the expenditure of one feat slot. The starting occupations are similarly overpowered, with one example (Heir), essentially giving the player a permanent minimum Wealth bonus of 10, allowing infinite purchases up to DC 20. Editing mistakes are common as well, but not enough to reduce my enjoyment of the book. Otherwise, I found D20 Modern to be very comprehensive, as it includes detailed rules for many Sci-fi standbys, including space travel and mecha. The book does exactly what it promises to do, and, if one overlooks the overpowered character options, promises to be a lot of fun to run.
