Twice, Japan's poker-playing Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto gambled his country's future in the waters off Hawaii. The attack on Pearl Harbor stunned the U.S. Pacific Fleet, but sparked furious anger among the Americans. Seven months later, the Japanese tried to lure the Americans into a pitched battle at Midway.
