Description

In 1944, the Allies made tireless efforts to conquer the heights of Monte Cassino, the monastery which was a strategic Italian strongpoint held by units of the German army.

Four campaigns faced long odds from the start – the terrain is virtually impassable and wherever Allied forces tried to climb, the Germans had perfect cover and observation points. The battles were among the most bitter of the war - a total of 80,000 Allied troops were killed or wounded as were at least 55,000 Germans.
