Description

Erwin Rommel won lasting fame at the head of the German Afrika Korps, but his first field command in World War II was the 7th Panzer Division, the so-called Ghost Division. During the 1940 campaign in western Europe the unit suffered more casualties than any other German division and inflicted heavy losses and the Allies, capturing nearly 100,000 prisoners while punching through Belgium and France. The Ghost Division’s success owed much to Rommel’s subordinates, who helped Rommel more than he acknowledged and whom historians have generally overlooked.
