Description

ROMMEL: THE RISE OF THE DESERT FOX

Our theme this month is WWII Early War, and our focus is General Erwin Rommel. Most WI readers will be familiar with ‘The Desert Fox’ from his exploits on the battlefields of North Africa. In this issue we use Rommel’s early war actions as a way to introduce you to this exciting period.

ROMMEL SAVES THE DAY: THE BATTLE OF ARRAS, 1940

The German push through Belgium and France in 1940 brought their forces to a climactic head-to-head with the
French and British armies at Arras. This scenario and battle report recreates the action between the 7th RTR on their advance towards Wailly, and the 7th Panzer Division.

ROMMEL'S NEXT MOVE

What happened next? We tie up this month’s theme content with a look at Rommel’s next move after his success at the Battle of Arras.

FIRST CONTACT ON THE SAMBRE

How about stopping off along the way to Waterloo to game another Hundred Days battle which uses significantly less figures but will still keep you on course? Sambre offers you a great opportunity to do just that!

THE NORTHERN WAR - NEW ZEALAND, 1845-46

What do the New Zealand Maori Wars have to offer the wargamer? Graham Burke makes a strong case for an often over-looked period and presents all the background you will need to bring the conflict to the tabletop.

AIN JALUT, 1260

Many miles from their natural stomping ground, Ain Jalut became the high-water mark of Mongol expansion. For the first time the Mongol hordes, whose Empire covered half of Asia, were decisively beaten.

TERROR AND SORROW - PART 2

The second of our two parter presenting background information and a scenario for the American War of Independence on the North Western frontier.

“BRILLIANT EVENTS": CHURUBUSCO, 1847

A look at the battles for Mexico City in the US-Mexican War of 1846-48, with a focus on Churubusco, a battle
described by Winfield Scott as “a brilliant event”.

THE BATTLE OF MARATHON

Recently described as “one of the most important battles in European history”, Marathon was a clash of the Titans between Greece and Persia and makes for an interesting tabletop battle.

PLUS we take a look at the winning entries at the Salute 2010 Painting Competition (UK) a look at Huzzah! (USA), a spotlight on Little Shop of Magic (USA), AND our monthly roundup of News.
